At Orchard Mead Academy we have recently established our own vocational centre. As part of our offer, a select group of students can take part in vocational courses. Our current offer is Construction and Hair and Beauty.

Construction gives students a strong, practical introduction to the construction industry while helping them build confidence, independence and employability skills. Throughout the course, students learn a wide range of hands-on trade skills such as bricklaying, painting and decorating, carpentry basics and the safe use of tools and equipment. They also develop important technical knowledge, including how to read drawings, plan projects, calculate materials and follow industry-standard health and safety practices. Alongside practical learning, students strengthen teamwork, problem solving, communication and resilience, skills that support them in any future career. By the end of the course, students are well prepared to progress into apprenticeships, further trade qualifications or entry-level roles within the construction sector, with a clear understanding of what working in the industry involves.

Hair and Beauty gives students a practical and engaging introduction to the industry while building confidence, creativity and essential employability skills. Students learn core techniques such as styling, blow-drying, plaiting, basic cutting, skin care, makeup application and nail services, as well as how to use tools, products and equipment safely and professionally. They also develop key theoretical knowledge, including understanding hair and skin structure, health and safety requirements and how to work effectively with clients. Alongside technical skills, students strengthen communication, teamwork, customer service and problem solving, helping them grow into confident and capable young professionals. By the end of the course, students are well prepared to progress into apprenticeships, further training or entry-level roles in salons, spas or other beauty settings, with a clear understanding of what a future career in hair and beauty can offer.

The course is assessed through formal assessments by instructors and pupils are encourage to regularly reflect on their practice with the member of senior leadership who oversees the course each half term.
