Success in Design and Technology for Orchard Mead students

We celebrated a great week in July for the Design department at OMA. Our first success came from a competition to redesign a sensory garden at Netherhall specialist school.  Local schools were invited to design a garden to support the students needs with an outdoor provision which will be supported by Leicester Rotary club. The students at OMA this week celebrated an outstanding success with seven of the prizes being awarded to Year 10 Design and Technology students. The Leicester Rotary club president Parmdeep Vadesha and rotary member Diana Esho – Managing Director Easy Internet Services Ltd awarded a variety of prizes to the students to celebrate their success.

The overall winner Abdalaziz was awarded a cash prize, trophy and certificate for the work which he completed and the offer of potential summer work with a local architectural company in association with The Rotary Club and an invitation to a summer course at a local university. The students created a range of designs which supported the needs of the students at Netherhall schools and worked with staff to understand the impact of the outdoor space on the students emotional and physical wellbeing. The students have also been invited to the opening of the garden in September of this term  and will be able to network with members of the Rotary club to develop their future prospects. We look forward to developing the students confidence and ever growing success encouraged by the believe that they can compete and succeed in competitive design competitions.

Our second success arrived for a OMA students in Year 7 who became the overall winner in the national secondary school section of STEM challenge 2021. Lily (7M7) was a worthy winner with her fantastic design where students were encouraged to create a piece of wearable technology for the Tokyo Olympics. Her work not only has been celebrated within OMA, but she will also have her work on display at the STEM headquarters in York.

I really hope we are able to celebrate greater successes in Design and Technology during the new academic year, and to keep up to date please follow us on twitter @OrchardMead_DT
